Zem House

A sustainable, zero-emission house designed and built by SJSU industrial design, engineering and architecture students.

 

An NSF sponsored, multidisciplinary capstone project engaged industrial design, engineering, business, and journalism students on a project to design and build a 100 square foot home that provided necessary amenities and as few emissions as possible in its production and operation.

The ZEM House was designed and built in 1.5 semesters while testing was done over the last half of the 2nd semester. Students worked together on a large team to design a comfortable space using passive solar design, a living roof with solar panels, water collection, and multifunctional furnishings. The prototype was built in two months using SIPs building technology. Testing on interior temperatures, solar panel efficiency, and water collection was conducted the last part of the semester
